50% of women in financially vulnerable circumstances hold less than £500 in savings. That's around 6 million women in the UK.
Life as it so beautifully does - Lifes!! It's less about asking if an emergency will happen, more about asking when it will happen. And when it does, we need to be prepared, especially as Mums because it's no longer just about us. Our kids are counting on us too.
If you're in that boat with less than £500 saved, there's no shame here. I was there too not so long ago, and I remember the first time I hit £1000 in savings and the relief I felt knowing I had that buffer.
You can get there too, and it starts today.
"But Emma, I don't have any money to save. I'm already stretched too thin."
I hear you, and I understand how it feels when there's nothing left at the end of the month. But here's the reality: if you don't make a change and start saving now, you will never change that reality and you'll stay stuck in the cycle.
The good news is you don't need much to start, you just need to start somewhere.
Here are 6 simple ways you can begin building your savings right now:
1. Cancel two subscriptions
Go and check every subscription you have right now - Netflix, YouTube Premium, Spotify, Apple Music, all of it. I'm not saying cut them all out, but choose two and stop them, then redirect that money straight into a savings account. YouTube Premium alone will save you £155 a year, and that's just one subscription.
2. Remove your card details from your phone
Do this right now, because it's way too easy to buy things when your card details are saved. Remove them and make yourself think twice before spending, and you'll be amazed how much this one change can save you without even realising it.
3. Pay yourself first
This is critical, and I mean it when I say even if it's just £5 or £10 a month, save some portion of your money no matter how small. Why make everyone else rich by paying them first and cheat yourself? You wouldn't skip paying a bill, so don't skip paying yourself.
4. Turn on round-up savings
If your bank offers this feature, enable it right now. Every time you spend, your bank will round up the purchase and save the difference automatically, and without you even realising it your money will slowly increase.
5. Automate your savings
Set up an automatic transfer for the day you get paid, even if it's just £10 or £20 a month. The more you can automate the better, because if you leave it to manual willpower you won't do it. Automation removes the decision and makes saving effortless.
6. Stay patient and consistent
If money is tight it's not going to happen overnight, but the small consistent action will compound and pay off eventually. £20 a month is £240 a year (combine that with your Youtube savings, you’ve got £395 and you're almost half way there). Once you see your savings growing you'll feel even more motivated to keep going.
These aren't complicated steps, they're just small simple actions you can take today. Start with one or two, automate what you can, and watch your buffer grow.
Make automation your friend and see how quickly you can get to £1000, or whatever your next savings goal is.
Mama, you've got this.
💛 Always,
Emma
